OpenAI appears to be exploring a more social side of ChatGPT after the launch of its AI video tool, Sora. According to new reports, the company is now testing a Direct Messaging (DM) feature in the ChatGPT app. This move may turn the AI chatbot into a direct instant messaging platform for real-time conversation and collaboration between users.
The upcoming feature was first discovered by developer Tibor Blaho, who revealed details on X (formerly Twitter). Hidden in version 1.2025.273 beta of the ChatGPT Android app, the code refers to a new communication tool inside the app known as Calpico. The system will allow users to share messages in a social media-like interface that is easy to use and allows one-on-one interactions or group discussions.
Interestingly, these Calpico Rooms might enable them to brainstorm together, co-create AI-generated content, and even directly post the result of text or image-generating outputs into the conversation. It also has privacy and control features, like blocking, chat request management, and interaction settings, making it feel more like a social network than a traditional chatbot.
The Direct Messaging option remains inactive at this point and has not been officially confirmed by OpenAI. It has not yet been announced when it will be rolled out to the public.
After the massive popularity of Sora, this experiment is part of the bigger vision of the company, means that ChatGPT is not only a tool for conversation, but a community-driven “everything app” within the expanding AI ecosystem.
