OpenAI has rolled out a major update to ChatGPT Images, with its new flagship image generation model called GPT Image 1.5. The update is now live within ChatGPT Images and is also available to developers via the OpenAI API.
The launch positions OpenAI as a direct competitor to Google’s fast-growing AI image editing ecosystem and its recent experiences with image editing systems such as Nano Banana. While the name may be less catchy, OpenAI says that the new model can generate images faster and more accurate edits, and is more consistent across outputs.
The update comes only a few days after OpenAI launched GPT 5.2, signaling an aggressive push to keep momentum amid increasing competition from Google and its Gemini models.
According to OpenAI, GPT Image 1.5 is created to understand users’ intentions more effectively, whether creating images from scratch or editing existing photos. According to the company, the model can edit images perfectly without breaking the visual details, which is a frequent complaint with AI image users.
OpenAI also says that image generation is four times faster now, making the experience less strenuous for both casual users and creators.
New Images tab added to ChatGPT

With the model update, OpenAI has added a dedicated Images tab within the ChatGPT app and web version. The new section can be used as a creation hub and a discovery feed, helping users to browse their ideas and get inspired with image prompts.
According to OpenAI, the idea is to make image generation more human-friendly and enjoyable, especially to those users who are exploring creatively rather than working with strict prompts.
How to try the new ChatGPT Images
The update is currently rolling out globally, and most users should have it already. To access it, users can visit ChatGPT and open the new Images tab, or visit chatgpt.com/images.
Free users will not have limited access, while paid users and developers can use full capabilities. GPT Image 1.5 is also available via the OpenAI API, with pricing details listed on OpenAI’s website.
