Pakistan now has 1,136 active 5G sites spread across 23 cities. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority released these numbers on August 4, and they mark a big jump from where things stood just months back.
Jazz is way out ahead. 689 sites, which comes out to about 61 percent of everything installed in the country so far. Zong has 338 sites, close to 30 percent. Ufone is sitting at 109.
Four cities are eating up most of the deployment. Karachi has 257 sites. Lahore has 241. Islamabad has 192, Faisalabad 131. Add those together and you get roughly 72 percent of the national total, all packed into just four cities.
That leaves 19 other cities splitting whatever’s left. Not a lot, in most cases.
PTA says it’s tracking all three operators closely to keep the rollout on schedule. Updates will keep going to the parliamentary committee handling telecom oversight, as has been the case throughout this process.
Operators appear to be racing against an informal deadline. Sources in the industry say August 14, Independence Day, is the internal target several companies are working toward for their next deployment milestone.
Jazz wants to hit around 1,000 sites total. Zong is aiming for 400 to 500. Ufone, now merged with Telenor Pakistan under the PTML name, is targeting close to 100 sites in this first phase.
Coverage outside the four major cities is still thin. That part hasn’t changed much despite the overall numbers climbing.
