Google Photos is also testing a new carousel for the Shortcuts area located at the top of the Collections tab on Android devices. Currently, the Collections tab top displays a 2×2 grid with the first two pill-shaped buttons being reserved for Favorites and Trash, and the bottom two slots rotate to display commonly used albums or folders.
The new carousel redesign introduces a portrait-style preview for most albums, except Archive and Trash, which remain unchanged. Each album or folder now appears as a rounded card, overlaid with a circular icon and its name. Additionally, the section is now clearly marked for easier navigation.
One notable feature of the new design is its dynamic refresh: the carousel will automatically update as soon as a new image is added to an album. However, this also means that access to Favorites or Trash is no longer permanent, and might affect users who rely on muscle memory for quick navigation.
The layout of the carousel displays three full cards and one partial card, making it easy to tap while maintaining visibility.

While having carousels at the top of the Photos and Collections tabs may seem repetitive, the idea is not new for most users. Currently, Google is testing this redesign on a single account and device, which means that it has not rolled out widely yet.
