Google has updated its photo to video feature in Google Photos, adding AI-powered tools that provide users more control over how still images turn into short videos. The update is important because it brings the feature closer to full video creation, not just simple animation.
The feature was first launched in July last year with a very basic setup. Users could choose two options, subtle movement or I’m feeling lucky. Both used preset motion effects, with little room to change the result.
With the new update, users can type their custom prompts to control the animation. Similar to how prompts work in Google Gemini app, user can explain motion, style, or mood in plain language. This allows it to create more personalised results instead of one size fits all effects.
Google has also added prompt ideas in the tool. They can be edited or reused, and videos can be made again until one feels they have the result. The company said this makes the feature easier for new users while still giving room to experiment.
Another change is automatic audio. Videos now include generated sound by default, adding more depth and realism to short clips.
The rollout has started, but is happening server-side, so availability may differ by region and device. The update is part of Google Photos’ Create tab and reflects Google’s wider push toward generative video tools, with higher daily limits available to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.
