YouTube has rolled out new parental control features to make teen accounts safer and age-appropriate, with a strong focus on short form content.
Now, parents can set screen time restrictions on YouTube Shorts on teen accounts. The update also allows caretakers to block Shorts scrolling completely by setting the limit to zero.
Parents can apply time controls for specific durations of the day and create reminders that remind teens to take breaks or sleep. According to YouTube, the feature provides more flexibility and direct control over short video consumption to families.
YouTube has also changed its recommendation system with minor accounts alongside screen limits. The new system gives priority to what the platform calls high-quality content, such as educational videos on reliable channels like Khan Academy, CrashCourse, and Ted Ed.
YouTube is still one of the most popular platforms among teens, as 9 out of 10 adolescents use the service, according to a recent study. Unlike other social apps, it is popular among younger and older teens equally.
In the past, the company has been criticized for its content moderation for minors. In response, YouTube has introduced several safety tools such as an age verification system that uses AI to identify suspected underage accounts and applies appropriate restrictions automatically.
