YouTube plans to allow creators use AI-generated versions of themselves in Shorts, as revealed in an annual letter published by CEO Neal Mohan on Wednesday. The move is aimed at expanding creative options and retaining creators with their identity.
Mohan said creators will soon be able to create short videos with their own likeness. He added that AI tools are being developed to support creativity rather than replace human creators.
Shorts is already one of YouTube’s largest formats, with approximately 200 billion views daily. The company is still investing in the format as competition grows from platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
YouTube has yet to provide complete details about the AI likeness feature. The tool will expand on the existing AI features in Shorts, including generated video clips, stickers, automatic dubbing, and other creativity tools.
Mohan said new controls will be added to help creators manage how their face or voice is used in AI-generated content. These controls will connect to the tools rolled out in October that allow eligible creators to detect and request the removal of AI videos generated without permission.
The company is also working to limit the spread of low-quality AI-generated content. Mohan explained that YouTube is improving systems to remove spam, clickbait, and repeat videos to keep Shorts feeds relevant and watchable.
YouTube will expand new Shorts, like image-based posts, along with AI updates. These formats are popular on other short video platforms and are expected to roll out slowly.
