It is already challenging to start as a content creator, and Instagram has now made it even more difficult. A new rule has been officially introduced on the platform, users must have at least 1,000 followers and a public account to go live.
Previously, anyone could use the Live feature without any follower restrictions. However, users are now receiving a message that says: “Your account is no longer eligible for Live. We changed the requirements to use this feature. Only public accounts with 1,000 followers or more will be able to create live videos.”
Small creators first noticed this message, and later, TechCrunch confirmed the change with Instagram itself.
What’s Changed?
- Only public accounts with 1,000+ followers can go live
- Private accounts cannot go live
- Instagram claims that it would change to improve the overall live consuming experience.
New creators are upset, and they have a right to be. Gaining 1,000 real followers is a long process, more so when starting to grow without purchasing fake followers. This change puts yet another hurdle in the way of emerging talent.
Instagram has not officially explained the reasons beyond a better user experience, but removing low-viewer streams likely helps Meta reduce moderation load, increase the discoverability of quality streams, and reduce operating costs.
The new rule on Instagram is similar to TikTok, requires a specific number of followers to go live. Compare these with each other:
| Platform | Follower Requirement | Other Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000+ followers | Public account required | |
| TikTok | Varies (often 1,000) | Age and activity can impact access |
| 100 followers | Account must be 60+ days old | |
| YouTube | 50+ subscribers | No other major restrictions |
| Twitch | 0 | No follower minimum to stream |
This move looks to favor those who already have influence and create content, making it difficult to give a chance to new voices.
