If you have ever noticed your Bluetooth headset started to decrease the volume of the audio quality every time you joined a voice chat on Windows 11, you are not alone. It is a very annoying problem that has affected many users, as the high-quality stereo audio is suddenly replaced with low-quality mono after switching on the microphone.
Microsoft has now finally solved this problem, revealing the root cause and rolling out a fix that would enable wireless gaming and chatting more comfortably.
Why Bluetooth audio loses quality on Windows 11
The issue comes from how Bluetooth Classic Audio works. Bluetooth normally uses two profiles:
- Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP): Delivers high-quality stereo sound but does not support microphone input.
- Hands-Free Profile (HFP): Supports microphone use but downgrades audio to mono.
Such profile-switching is the reason why many gamers noticed their audio sounded great when playing games like Forza Horizon 5, only to have it become downgraded the moment they joined a voice chat.
Microsoft’s Fix: Super Wideband Stereo with LE Audio
Microsoft is adding super wideband stereo in Windows 11 to fix the problem. Instead of depending on the outdated A2DP and HFP system, Windows 11 now uses the Telephony and Media Profile (TMAP) that combines high-quality stereo sound playback with microphone support.
It is an upgrade to Bluetooth LE Audio that is more efficient in compressing sound, making it closer to the original quality, and yet allows voice chat.
What You Need to Use the Fix
To take advantage of this update, you will need:
- A Bluetooth LE Audio-compatible headset.
- Latest Windows 11 update.
- Manufacturer-released LE Audio driver updates.
To gamers and streamers, and anyone who regularly uses Bluetooth headsets for calls, this fix means no more choosing between playing games in crystal-clear sound or having to use your microphone. It is a small but impactful update that makes Windows 11 closer to a smooth wireless experience.
