TikTok Offers A Livestream Music Contest

TikTok has announced the launch of a new music competition titled “Gimme the Mic”. The contest is designed to be similar to popular television shows like The Voice and will take place entirely through TikTok’s live-streaming feature.

The competition is divided into three stages: audition, semifinal, and grand finale. Aspiring artists are invited to share a 30-second audition video using the hashtag #GIMMETHEMIC. From these entries, the top 30 will be selected to move on to the semifinals where they will perform in a live-streamed event.

Viewers of the live stream will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite contestants, determining who will advance to the grand finale. The US finale is scheduled for September 10th and will feature the top 10 participants. The winner of this event will then have the chance to compete globally with winners from other countries.

The prize for the US competition winner is 50,000 “Diamonds”, TikTok’s in-app currency. However, the exact value of these Diamonds in USD remains unclear due to TikTok’s lack of transparency on the matter. Past estimates suggest that each Diamond is worth approximately $0.05, which would make the total prize worth around $2,500. TikTok has not provided any official information on the current conversion rates.

Despite this, TikTok has confirmed that the usual 50 percent deduction it takes from creators’ earnings from in-app gifts will not apply to the competition rewards. This clarification was made by TikTok spokesperson Zachary Kizer in a statement to The Verge.

This competition comes as part of TikTok’s ongoing efforts to enhance its live-streaming capabilities. The platform has been introducing new creator tools for live streaming and has been focusing on events that encourage audience engagement. Earlier this year, TikTok introduced live trivia games, further demonstrating its commitment to interactive, live content.

“Gimme the Mic” offers musicians a new platform for recognition and exposure, even if the immediate rewards seem modest. With TikTok’s reputation as a hit generator, this competition could potentially catapult lesser-known artists into the mainstream.
