How to Stop Others From Sharing Your Status Updates

WhatsApp Status updates are meant to disappear after 24 hours, but that doesn’t mean they always stay within your intended circle. Between the “Allow Sharing” feature and recent changes to who can see your status at all, it’s worth knowing exactly what controls you have.

The good news is that WhatsApp gives you full control over both of these things. Here’s what’s actually changed, and how to lock your status down in a few taps.

What “Allow Sharing” actually does

WhatsApp lets contacts reshare a status update to their own status, but only if the original poster has allowed it. This is separate from who can view your status.

Here’s the part most guides get wrong: this resharing feature is off by default. WhatsApp designed it this way specifically to prevent updates from spreading further than intended, so unless you’ve actively turned it on for a status, nobody can reshare it in the first place.

That said, it’s still worth checking your settings, especially if you’ve experimented with the feature before or aren’t sure what’s currently enabled.

How to turn off status resharing

On Android

1. Open WhatsApp.
2. Tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner.
3. Go to Settings.
4. Tap Privacy.
5. Select Status.
6. Turn off Allow Sharing.

On iPhone

1. Open WhatsApp.
2. Tap Settings in the bottom right corner.
3. Tap Privacy.
4. Select Status.
5. Turn off Allow Sharing.

Once this is off, contacts who view your status won’t have the option to repost it to their own status, regardless of who they are.

Who can see your status: Some setting that matters more

Resharing controls what happens after someone sees your status. The setting that controls who sees it in the first place is arguably more important, and it’s found in the same Status privacy menu:

• My Contacts – visible to everyone saved in your phone
• My Contacts Except – visible to your contacts, excluding people you pick
• Only Share With – visible only to a specific list you choose

For most people who want a genuinely private circle, Only Share With is the safest option, since it limits your audience to an exact list rather than your entire contact book.

Other privacy settings

While you are in the Status privacy menu, it’s a good time to review a few related settings:

• Mute specific contacts’ status if you don’t want to see updates without blocking them.
• Profile photo and last seen visibility, found under the same Privacy menu, since these often get overlooked.
• Linked devices, to make sure no unfamiliar device has access to your account.

None of these directly control status resharing, but they round out your overall privacy on the app.
