OpenAI has announced it will retire several older models from ChatGPT starting February 13, as the company moves its focus toward latest GPT 5 systems.
The models being removed include GPT 4o, GPT 4.1, GPT 4.1 mini, and o4 mini. OpenAI said the move is part of a broader effort to consolidate model usage and accelerate upgrades centered on personalization and creative features. The company clarified that the change will not affect its API services.
The decision follows earlier plans to phase out GPT 5 Instant and GPT 5 Thinking, as OpenAI streamlines its model lineup.
GPT 4o, once considered one of OpenAIās flagship models, is being retired since most of the activity of users has shifted elsewhere. According to the company, GPT 5.2 now accounts for almost daily usage on ChatGPT. Only around 0.1 percent of users continue to use GPT 4o.
OpenAI acknowledged that GPT 4o retained a loyal user base even after initial deprecation plans. Following feedback from Plus and Pro subscribers, access to the model was temporarily restored. Users said they relied on it for creative work and preferred its conversational tone, describing it as warmer and more natural.
That feedback, OpenAI said, played a role in shaping newer versions. GPT 5.1 and GPT 5.2 now include improved personality traits, stronger creative support, and expanded customization options. ChatGPT users can select base styles and adjust warmth or enthusiasm in responses.
The company said it is also working to reduce overly cautious behavior and unnecessary refusals in responses, which have often been mentioned by users.
While OpenAI acknowledged that retiring older models may frustrate some users, it said the move will allow focus more on the tools most people now rely on. The company also pointed to ongoing work on the flexibility and adult orientation of ChatGPT without compromising security.
OpenAI added that age prediction features for under 18 users have now been rolled out in most markets, as part of its broader safety framework.
