OpenAI, the company that owns ChatGPT and Sora, is reportedly working on a new AI-powered music-generation tool that could join its series of creative AI products soon. According to a recent report from The Information, this unreleased tool would allow users to generate original music by describing the type or style of track they want, just like OpenAI’s existing image and video generation features.
OpenAI already made headlines with GPT-4o, the multimodal model that introduced realistic image and voice capabilities to ChatGPT and Sora 2, its advanced video generation platform that went viral for producing cinematic-quality videos. The company now appears to be prepared to expand into the audio space.
The upcoming AI music generator would allow users to compose instrumental songs, background music, or even pieces designed to accompany vocal performances. This move positions OpenAI to directly compete with popular platforms like Suno, MusicLM by Google, and Udio, which already allow users to compose music with AI-powered prompts.
How the AI Music Tool Might Work
The new product will reportedly work similarly to OpenAI’s image and video tools. Users will enter a prompt like “a relaxing piano song with light percussion” or “an energetic rock-based introduction to a podcast”, and the model will create an original music clip that matches the description.
It may also be integrated with OpenAI’s existing products. For example, Sora 2 already supports sound effects and dialogue on videos, while the voice mode of ChatGPT allows the AI to read responses aloud. The music model could enhance these experiences with background scores or theme music, adding another layer of creativity to OpenAI’s ecosystem.
According to the report, OpenAI is collaborating with Juilliard students to annotate musical scores, which will help train the model. These annotations would teach the AI how to understand musical structure, rhythm, and emotion.
While the release date and name of the model remain unknown, insiders believe that the project is well underway and may be one of OpenAI’s next major announcements.
