Meta has rolled out new safety features to make the Instagram safer among teenagers and children. The update focuses on making direct messaging becoming safer, as far as it is here that many unsafe interactions often take place.
This update is useful in making teens better understand the context of chatting before they start a chat. Instagram will now show the date when an account was created when a teenager sends a message to a person for the first time. This information may help the young users identify suspicious profiles, including profiles that have been recently registered and might be used by scammers or fake users.
Meta has also made the process of blocking unwanted communication easier. When a teen decides to block someone, they can now block and report the account in a single step instead of taking the actions separately.
Moreover, Instagram will display a safety reminder that they will see when the teenagers are about to start conversations, even with someone they already follow. These prompts invite them to think carefully before engaging, asking them to make sure that they know the other, to ensure that they feel safe in what they are doing, and to remind them not to share personal information when they are not sure.
The protections are not just for teens. Instagram will extend a similar type of safety for adult-managed accounts when it comes to sharing children with the similar accounts of parents sharing pictures of their children or managers of accounts belonging to young creators below the age of 13.
The messaging settings will be more strict in such accounts, and any offensive words or comments will automatically be blocked by the tools, such as Hidden Words, activated on the account. These users will be notified at the top of the feed that the safety settings were changed.
These new measures build on Instagram’s existing protections, such as Safety Notices, Location Warnings, and Nudity Protection to minimize any adverse encounters. Meta says that the idea is to provide the younger users and their families with more control, transparency, and a more secure feeling when using the platform.
