Meta has recently rolled back its highly controversial AI image generation feature after receiving criticism over privacy and consent concerns. For a short time, users can create AI-generated images by entering an Instagram account username.
The feature has been rolled out as part of Meta’s new AI image model, Muse Image. It was created to make AI-generated content more personal by allowing users to mention public Instagram accounts in their prompts. But the launch sparked privacy concerns for experts, creators, and regular users.
Why did the feature face strong criticism
One of the biggest concerns was transparency. People were not notified if someone used their public Instagram profile to create AI-generated images. But critics said that users should have been given a clear option before this feature became available.
Following the backlash, Meta confirmed that it has removed the feature. The company said the experiment did not meet expectations and discontinued its offering soon after launch.
Why you should still check your Instagram settings
Although the feature is no longer available, Instagram users should still check their privacy settings. If your account is public, your posts and reels may still be usable in some Meta AI experiences depending on your account settings and region.
To check your settings, open Instagram, go to Profile, tap the Menu, then open Sharing and reuse. If available in your app, review the options related to allowing your content to be reused with Meta AI features. These controls may vary because Meta rolls out new features gradually across different countries.

Simple Ways to Protect Your Privacy
If you are looking for more privacy, you can change your Instagram account to private. A private account hides the content you post from the public and reduces the chances of your photos being used beyond your intended audience.
Security experts also recommend turning on two-factor authentication for all Meta accounts. It does not impact the AI features, but it offers an important layer of security against unauthorized account access.
Meta is rolling out more AI features on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Users should check their privacy settings and stay informed about official updates to understand how their content may be used.
