Instagram has unveiled a new AI-powered feature called Your Algorithm. The tool will provide users with a transparent view of the topics that appear on their Reels feed and let them change those interests with a few taps. It appears as an icon in the upper right corner of Reels. Upon opening, it displays a list of interests depending on the things that the user has viewed previously.
Meta says the update will provide people with greater control over what they see. Instagram allows users to indicate what they want to see or not, and it responds to this in real time.
The feature arrives during a period when both regulators and users are demanding more transparency on social platforms. Many critics say hidden algorithms can create echo chambers or boost harmful content. Social media companies have made their algorithms sensitive technology, but according to Meta, Instagram must adapt to the changing expectations.
The new tool provides an easy overview of their best interests to the users. It also has a search bar that allows them to search for specific topics. Meta says Instagram is leading the push for transparency and will make the feature accessible outside Reels. It will soon be added to Explore and other sections of the app.
Your Algorithm was launched on Wednesday in the United States, and it will be rolled out globally in the English language soon. The timing also matches a major policy shift in Australia, which banned users under 16 from several major platforms, including Instagram. According to the Australian government, the move aims to protect young people from what it calls predatory algorithms.
Instagram’s new update signals a wider trend. Social platforms are being pushed to reveal more about their systems, and users have more options to create what they view.
