WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to make calls and chat with others just by searching their username without their phone numbers. This update, spotted by feature tracker WABetaInfo, was found in recent iOS and Android beta builds. However, the feature is still in the development phase, and it is not yet available to the testers.
This feature aims to make communication on WhatsApp more private, like Signal, where users can connect without their personal contact details. The new update will add a “username key” system to enable more privacy and security, and allow users to interact with unknown users more safely.
How the feature will work
According to early reports, WhatsApp users can now search a username in the Calls tab in a search bar. After finding a valid username, they can immediately make a voice or video call without sharing their phone numbers.
Before making the call, callers can even see the profile photo of the recipient, depending on their privacy settings. However, details about the username format, availability, and privacy options are still unclear.
Other upcoming WhatsApp features
Along with the username system, WhatsApp is reportedly working on some new features to improve the user experience
- Customize your profile with cover images similar to Facebook.
- Manage in-chat storage more efficiently.
- Sort and find stickers or media easily.
- Avoid spam or bulk messaging.
- Add interactive elements to WhatsApp Channels.
All these features are currently under testing and are expected to be rolled out gradually soon.
WhatsApp companion app for Apple Watch
WhatsApp is also working on a new companion app on Apple Watch, revealed in a TestFlight build of WhatsApp on iOS. WhatsApp already supports Apple Watch, but the existing version offers limited features.
The upcoming companion app will focus on increasing users and giving Apple Watch users more ways to communicate and interact, such as messaging and notification features. Though WhatsApp has not announced a release date, it’s expected to roll out soon after further testing.
