Former Tennessee Legislator Roy Herron Tragically Dies in Jet Ski Accident

Roy Herron, a former legislator from Tennessee and a prominent figure of the Democratic party, tragically passed away following a jet ski accident on Kentucky Lake. The unfortunate incident occurred on July 1, and Herron succumbed to his injuries at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville on the following Sunday.

The 69-year-old politician suffered severe injuries, including internal bleeding and extensive damage to his arm and pelvis. His family shared the news of his passing on their Caring Bridge Website. Herron’s wife, Rev. Nancy Carol Miller-Herron, expressed her grief, stating that her husband loved his family immensely and passed away doing what he cherished most – spending time outdoors with their sons and their friends.

Herron, an attorney hailing from Dresden, Tennessee, had a distinguished political career spanning 26 years. He served in both the state’s House and Senate, where he held significant positions such as the chairman of the floor and caucus chair for the Democrats. He also led the state Democratic Party from 2013 to 2015. Notably, Herron never missed a day of the session, except for the birth of his youngest son, as stated on his website.

In addition to his political career, Herron was an accomplished academic. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin and was among the first students to earn joint degrees in divinity and law from Vanderbilt University. He also authored three books, one of which is titled “God and Politics: How Can a Christian Be in Politics?”

Tributes poured in for the late lawmaker. Former Vice President Al Gore referred to him as “a dear friend and one of Tennessee’s most devoted citizens.” Democratic Representative Steve Cohen praised Herron as “bright, diligent, and honest,” while Republican Representative David Kustoff acknowledged his dedication to serving West Tennessee and the entire Volunteer State. Tennessee House Republican Caucus Chairman Jeremy Faison also paid tribute, describing Herron as a likable person.

Herron briefly ran for governor and later became the Democratic nominee in Tennessee’s 8th Congressional District when then-Representative John Tanner announced his retirement after more than 20 years of service. His untimely death marks a significant loss for the state of Tennessee and the Democratic party.
