The higher the number of devices connected to a WiFi network, the overall internet speed starts to drop. It may be an open WiFi network or a password-protected personal network, but too many users can cause slow browsing and inconsistent connectivity. While users struggle slow speeds, the WiFi owner (host) remains has full control over who can stay connected.
When you notice that unknown devices are using your bandwidth, you can block unwanted WiFi users without much effort using the Access Control feature available of most routers. Here is a step-by-step guide for TP-Link, D-Link and NetGear routers to help you secure your network.
Block WiFi users using Access Control
Access Control lets you select which devices can stay connected and which ones should be blocklisted. To enable it, follow these steps.

- Under Online Devices, you will see all connected users.
- Click the Block Icon next to the device you want to remove.

NetGear: Restrict WiFi access easily
- Connect your device to the router’s WiFi.
- In your browser, open
- routerlogin.net or routerlogin.com
- Enter the username and password (admin/password).
- Go to Advanced > Advanced Setup > Wireless Settings.
- Select Set Up Access List.

Once done, your WiFi will only allow devices whose MAC addresses you have approved, and others will not be permitted to access the WiFi.
