In the wake of severe thunderstorms in western Kansas, KSN Chief Meteorologist Lisa Teachman has been diligently tracking the weather conditions. The storms have led to a series of warnings and watches across the region, causing significant damage in several areas.
On Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m., Lebanon in Smith County reported fallen tree limbs with diameters ranging from 6 to 10 inches. As the day progressed, the storm intensified, leading to broken power poles in Agra, Phillips County, around 11:45 p.m. The severity of the storm was such that a roof hit a power pole, resulting in downed power lines. Similar incidents were reported 5 miles east of Phillipsburg and 4 miles west of Kirwin, where wind gusts reached up to 59 MPH.
The storm continued its rampage with wind gusts of 61 MPH reported at Smith Center at 10:43 p.m., and 8 miles southeast of Glade in Phillips County at 10:29 p.m. Two miles west-southwest of Phillipsburg, the wind speed escalated to 63 MPH by 10:15 p.m.
Earlier in the evening, around 7:59 p.m., quarter-size hail was reported 4 miles north of Colby and 1 mile west of Trenton, accompanied by a 60 MPH wind gust. Atwood experienced wind gusts up to 68 MPH by 7:08 p.m.
In Rawlins County, wind gusts of 66 MPH were reported 2 miles north of Atwood, and a 68 MPH gust was reported 7 miles north of Ludell. The Goodland National Weather Service also received multiple reports of landspouts in northern Wallace County, although these were short-lived and occurred over rural locations.
At 6:21 p.m., Benkelman in Dundy County, Nebraska, reported wind damage due to a severe thunderstorm. A spotter shared an image on social media showing a healthy tree limb, 6 inches in diameter, downed onto a truck.
To aid in tracking the severe weather, various radars are being utilized, including Interactive Radar, Wichita Metro, South-Central Kansas, Kansas, Regional, North-Central Kansas, Southwest Kansas, and Northwest Kansas. Additionally, SkyView cameras are monitoring the skies over Downtown Wichita, WSU Campus, Northeast Wichita, Garden City, Hays, Hutchinson, Great Bend, Colby, and Pratt.
