Microsoft is reportedly working on a new ad-supported level of Xbox Cloud Gaming that may allow players to stream games they already have without a Game Pass subscription. The move would a major change in the process of Xbox cloud streaming.
According to sources cited by Windows Central, the upcoming option would allow gamers to play their digitally purchased Xbox titles freely on supported devices, but with ads that display during gameplay sessions
Some users saw signs of the plan recently when they received a message mentioning “1 hour of ad-supported play time per session” when they launched cloud-based games. The tier is not live, but the message suggests internal testing is already underway.
Currently, Xbox Cloud Gaming requires an active Game Pass subscription, even if users might have already purchased the game they plan to stream. Cloud gaming would become more affordable, as the new model would remove the need for hundreds of purchasable titles.
Microsoft plans to roll out the ad-supported Xbox Cloud Gaming tier later this year. If launched, it could attract casual players and expand Xbox’s cloud reach.
