After quietly testing the app in Brazil last month, Meta is now rolling out Pocket to everyone in the US.
Pocket runs on what’s called vibe coding, using AI prompts instead of actual programming to create something. You type in what you want, and the AI builds it. Meta calls these creations “gizmos” rather than games, because honestly, some of them are much closer to interactive toys than proper games.
Once a gizmo is created, it goes live on a scrollable feed, TikTok-style, where anyone can find it, play it, save it, remix it into something new, or repost it straight to their profile.
These aren’t limited to tap controls. Depending on what someone makes, a Gizmo can respond to shaking or tilting your phone, come with sound effects or custom audio, even use photos taken directly from your camera roll.
None of this came out of nowhere. Meta acquired the team behind an app called Gizmo earlier this year, and Pocket is essentially built on that foundation. Now that Pocket is getting bigger, Meta has shut down the original Gizmo app for good.
One thing to know, you can’t create a Pocket account separate from your Meta account. And there’s no way to delete just your Pocket profile; deleting it means deleting your entire Meta account.
Josh Siegel, who ran the original Gizmo team before it was absorbed into Meta, called the shutdown of Gizmo bittersweet, a work of many people, but said he’s excited for what’s next for Pocket.
Meta isn’t alone in pursuing this idea. An app called Sekai, built around a similar concept, just raised $20 million in Series A funding, according to Business Insider, which says something about how much investor interest is growing around this whole space right now.
Pocket also fits into a larger pattern. Meta has been rolling out AI experiments all year, AI bedtime stories, a Mac version of the Meta AI app, and a steady stream of AI features across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Not everyone is happy about it. Some coverage has pointed to the rollout as Meta already facing pushback over how much AI-generated content is filling its platform.
