Proton Authenticator brings secure 2FA to all platforms

Proton has announced a new tool aimed at digital security enthusiasts named Proton Authenticator. This dedicated app replaces third-party two-factor authentication apps such as Google Authenticator and Authy.

Proton has announced the launch of its encrypted email service, along with a free, cross-platform, two-factor authentication (2FA) app, Proton Authenticator. It is more user-friendly and provides a high level of security and privacy.

This move brings one of Proton Pass’s most popular features, with built-in 2FA, to a standalone application, addressing users’ complaints about having to use codes exclusively on the Proton Pass mobile app. The new app solves such concerns by offering a separate, full-capable authenticator accessible on any Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, or Linux.

Why Proton Authenticator Stands Out

Unlike many 2FA apps, Proton Authenticator is open-source and end-to-end encrypted, so Proton does not have access to the stored authentication data. This transparency and privacy-first model differs from alternatives such as Google Authenticator, Duo, or Authy.

Proton Authenticator has some features:

  • Encrypted Sync: Secure syncing of your 2FA tokens across devices.
  • Full Cross-Platform Support: Works well on desktop, mobile, and even Linux.
  • Easy Migration: Import existing 2FA tokens from other apps.

According to Eamonn Maguire, Head of Account Security at Proton, the company believes that it should never compromise your convenience or privacy in favor of strong security. This is why we developed Proton Authenticator, which gives users the confidence that their 2FA codes are always available, regardless of whether they’re using Google or Microsoft.

With two-factor authentication becoming more of a standard on websites and platforms to ensure user security, Proton Authenticator comes at the opportune moment, bringing a reliable and non-invasive means to securing the online identities of its users without compromising utility.

This development continues Proton’s trend of building a growing ecosystem of secure tools (with Proton Mail, Proton Drive, and Proton VPN all based on the principles of transparency and user data security).

Proton Authenticator is available now on Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, and Linux.
