Prime Energy Drink Under Scrutiny: US Food Agency Urged to Investigate High Caffeine Levels

A popular energy drink, Prime, backed by influential YouTube personalities Logan Paul and KSI, is under the microscope due to its high caffeine content. The beverage, which has gained viral popularity among children, is now facing scrutiny from lawmakers and health experts.

Senator Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, has called on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate the beverage brand. Schumer expressed concern over the product’s appeal to children, stating that it has become a sought-after status symbol among young people. However, he warned parents and buyers about the potential health risks associated with the drink.

Prime, which advertises itself as a zero-sugar and vegan product, was an instant hit following its launch last year. The neon-colored cans quickly became a sensation, leading to long queues in grocery stores and even reports of resale markets in schoolyards.

However, the drink’s high caffeine content has raised eyebrows. Each 12-ounce can of Prime contains 200 milligrams of caffeine, equivalent to approximately six cans of Coke or nearly two cans of Red Bull. This high caffeine content led to bans in some schools in the United Kingdom and Australia, where pediatricians warned of potential health impacts on young children, including heart problems, anxiety, and digestive issues.

In response to these concerns, company representatives have defended the product, stating that it is clearly labeled as “not recommended for children under 18”. The company also sells a separate sports drink, Prime Hydration, which contains no caffeine.

Despite this, Schumer claimed in his letter to the FDA that there is little noticeable difference in the online marketing of the two drinks. This has led many parents to mistakenly believe they were purchasing juice for their children, only to end up with a highly caffeinated beverage. Schumer has called for an investigation into the claims made in the sponsored content advertising the Prime energy drink, as well as its ingredients and caffeine content.
