Microsoft joins the bandwagon of the AI browsers with Copilot-enhanced Edge. On Monday, the company launched Copilot Mode, an agentic AI feature that works as an opt-in experimental feature. It includes contextual awareness behind open tabs, natural voice commands for hands-free web navigation, and a chatbot-based assistant capable of responding to questions about the page you are reading.
Copilot Mode is soon becoming more than just an answer to questions, as it will be able to take control of your browser to perform tasks like making reservations. It will also remember your browsing habits and give appropriate recommendations based on your actions.
Microsoft Edge shift puts the platform in the company of such programs as Perplexity Comet and ChatGPT Agent, apply autonomous reasoning models to perform more complex actions, like online shopping, calendar management, and more. As Google reportedly faces pressure to offload Chrome, AI-driven browsers are expected to become an increasingly competitive alternative to traditional players.
AI browsers like Copilot are designed to be more than just search tools. They want to become proactive digital assistants, taking care of your tasks and needs. However, concerns such as data privacy, security threats, and website compatibility remain hurdles.
Copilot Mode is entirely optional and under user control; you can turn it off at any time, and Microsoft assures clear visual indicators when it’s active. Only with your permission should access be allowed to such sensitive data as passwords or history.
