The third edition of the Global Canada T20 2023 is set to commence on Friday, July 21, with a thrilling face-off between Brampton Wolves and Mississauga Panthers. This eagerly-awaited 20-over tournament is making a comeback after a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Organized by Cricket Canada and recognized by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the tournament will feature six teams: Brampton Wolves, Mississauga Panthers, Montreal Tigers, Surrey Jaguars, Toronto Nationals, and Vancouver Knights. Each team will comprise 16 players from full and associate nations, including two world-renowned players, three Canadian national team talents, and three emerging Canadian players.
The tournament will follow a round-robin format in the league stage, where all teams will play a total of seven games. The top four teams at the end of the league phase will qualify for the playoffs. The playoffs will see the top two teams compete in Qualifier 1 for a direct spot in the final, while the third and fourth-placed teams will meet in the Eliminator for a spot in Qualifier 2. Qualifier 2 will pit the loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator for the second spot in the final.
The tournament will span over 18 days, with a total of 25 matches being played. All matches will be held at the CAA Centre in Brampton, Ontario. The tournament will feature big names like Chris Gayle, Harbhajan Singh, Kieron Pollard, Shoaib Malik, and Andre Russell.
The tournament will kick off with Brampton Wolves vs Mississauga Panthers at 1:00 AM IST on July 21, followed by Vancouver Knights vs Toronto Nationals at 8:30 PM IST. The league matches will continue until August 3, with the playoffs starting on August 4. The grand finale will take place on Sunday, August 6, at 9:30 PM IST.
The inaugural edition of the tournament was won by Vancouver Knights, while Winnipeg Hawks clinched the title in the second edition. With the return of the tournament, cricket fans worldwide are eagerly waiting to see who will emerge as the champions of the Global Canada T20 2023.
