Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) Chief, Imran Khan, has been arrested in connection with the Toshakhana case. The 70-year-old political leader was detained in Lahore, the provincial capital, and is expected to be transferred to Islamabad, the federal capital, for further legal proceedings.
The arrest followed a directive from the trial court that issued an arrest warrant for Khan after sentencing him to three years in prison. The Inspector General of Islamabad Police was instructed to execute the arrest immediately following the verdict in the graft case.
The arrest took place at Zaman Park, Khan’s well-known residence, where a large contingent of Lahore police arrived to detain the PTI chief. This event marks a low point in Khan’s political career, as he faces serious corruption charges.
Earlier in the day, Judge Humayun Dilawar found Khan guilty of corrupt practices related to the Toshakhana case and announced the sentence. The judge stated that the graft charges against the former prime minister were proven, citing that Khan had submitted false details to the electoral authority.
However, it’s worth noting that earlier this week, the Islamabad High Court rejected the lower court’s verdict that had declared the Toshakhana reference against Khan as maintainable for criminal proceedings. The High Court also dismissed Khan’s appeal to transfer the case to another court. Despite these setbacks, the legal proceedings against Khan continue, marking a significant chapter in Pakistan’s political landscape.
