Do you want to learn how to set up a VPN on a Windows 10 or a Mac? When it comes to setting up a virtual private network (VPN) for personal protection or watching a lot more films from American Netflix, it might be difficult to find a reliable service or figure out how to get your Windows 10 or Mac computer to identify the network. Thankfully, we’re here to help.
Before you set up a VPN, you should look for a secure VPN. There are several VPN services available today; for the purpose of this post, we will choose ExpressVPN because it’s compatible with a broad range of devices, including your Mac and PC, though the steps are the same for whichever VPN you’ve selected.
How to set up a VPN on Windows 10
This section will be useful for PC users. There are many methods to install and manage a VPN on your computer, so we’ll divide them into sections.
Use the Dedicated App
Most VPN providers now include a Windows program that you can put on your PC. This is most likely the simplest approach for establishing a VPN on your Windows 10 device.
- Go to the website of your VPN provider and look for the option to download the particular program. If you use ExpressVPN, the URL is available here. Note that you may need to authenticate into your account before you can download the app.
- Sign into your VPN account and open the app (you may use the search box in the bottom left). You may need to return to the VPN’s website to obtain a code or finish the verification process.
- You can connect and disconnect your VPN as well as modify your location after logging in.
Add VPN Connection on Windows PC
Your VPN can be easily configured in the settings of your Windows 10 device. Here’s how it’s done:
Note: Some of the information required to complete the procedures in this section may need you to contact your System Administrator or VPN provider.
- Tap on the Settings cog after clicking on the Windows symbol in the lower right-hand corner of your PC.
- Select Network & Internet.
- Select VPN.
- Select Add a VPN Connection.
- You’ll now be sent to a page with many fields to fill out. Select Windows (Built-in) from the dropdown menu at the top.
- Next, give your VPN a name. Then, in the following box, type in the IP address of the VPN server.
- The following box requests the VPN type. Click the dropdown menu box and select the type of VPN connection you require.
- You can now enter your Username and Password. This is not the username and password you use to access your VPN service provider. However, the service provides it. Contact your VPN provider or check the VPN’s website for this information.
- Finally, at the bottom, click Save.
After you’ve completed these steps, you can control and connect to your VPN by clicking the up arrow in the taskbar and right-clicking on it. You can then choose Connect/Disconnect.
How to set up a VPN on MacOS
Setting up a VPN on your Mac is simple. You may install a specialized program (if your provider offers one) from the VPN website, or you can set one up in the settings, similar to the PC instructions. Here’s how it’s done:
- Select Apple menu | System Preferences | Network to find the relevant menu.
- A small + sign appears at the bottom left of the list of connections. Choose it.
- Select the blue arrow on the ‘Interface’ bar in the pop-up that appears to reveal a drop-down menu. Choose “VPN.”
- Select the blue arrow in the “VPN Type” box below and select the proper type of VPN indicated by your provider.
- Choose a name for your VPN that will only be used for reference, then click “Create.”
- Fill up the Server Address and Account Name fields using the information provided by your provider.
- Select the ‘Authentication Method’ option recommended by your provider. Choose “OK.”
- Check the box next to ‘Send all traffic through VPN connection’ and click ‘Advanced’. Choose “OK.”
- Tick the box next to “Show VPN status in menu bar” and then click the “Apply” button in the bottom right corner.
- The VPN symbol will appear in the upper right corner of the menu bar. Select it and then click “Connect” to connect to the VPN.
Your VPN configuration on your macOS device is now complete.
