Rising Flood Alert in Punjab: India’s Release of Water into River Sutlej Triggers Concern

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Lahore has issued a flood warning for the Ravi Sutlej region as India continues to discharge water into Pakistan. This action has raised concerns about the potential rise in water levels in major rivers across Pakistan, prompting authorities to declare a high alert.

The Meteorological Office has also forecasted additional rainfall from July 13 to 17 in the upper and central regions of Pakistan, further exacerbating the situation. The continuous release of water by India into the River Sutlej follows a week of deadly torrential rains that have claimed over 100 lives. As a result, New Delhi is discharging increasing volumes of water towards downstream areas.

Media reports indicate that more than 169,000 cusecs of water have been directed towards Pakistan, raising fears of a surge in water levels in rivers and adjoining areas due to the predicted monsoon spell. This situation has necessitated urgent measures, including the evacuation of residents from low-lying areas.

In response to the impending crisis, all relevant departments have been instructed to finalize arrangements for the potential flood. These preparations include the evacuation of local residents from vulnerable, low-lying areas to ensure their safety.

The country’s premier disaster management authority has also reported a medium-level flood from India, which is expected to reach the Ganda Singhwala village in the Kasur district shortly. This development underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action to mitigate the impact of the potential flood.

The ongoing release of water by India into the River Sutlej, coupled with the forecasted rains, has triggered a flood alert in Punjab. The situation calls for swift action and comprehensive measures to safeguard the lives and properties of the residents in the affected areas.
