A journalist was reportedly dismissed from his position at the state-owned broadcaster, Pakistan Television (PTV), after posing a critical question to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The incident underscores the ongoing issue of limited space for free media in the country.
Azam Chaudhry, who also serves as the President of the Lahore Press Club, had been employed by PTV as an analyst. However, his tenure was abruptly cut short on the same day he questioned the prime minister. Despite his dismissal, Chaudhry has not received any formal written notification from PTV regarding his termination.
The contentious interaction took place during a press conference at the Punjab Governor’s House on June 30. Chaudhry asked PM Shehbaz when the unannounced media restrictions in the country would be lifted. He emphasized that his question echoed the concerns of the entire journalist community, highlighting the widespread media bans prevalent in Pakistan’s current era.
Chaudhry further pressed the prime minister for specifics on the resolution of these media restrictions. He pointed out the discrepancy between the claims of political parties like PML-N and PPP, who profess to support freedom of expression, and the reality of media suppression in the country.
In response to Chaudhry’s probing questions, PM Shehbaz stated that he was against such restrictions. He deferred the matter to the information minister, encouraging Chaudhry to voice any legitimate concerns he had. While acknowledging the past events, the prime minister assured Chaudhry that his valid concerns would be addressed.
This incident has brought the issue of media freedom in Pakistan into sharp focus, raising questions about the extent to which journalists can freely express their views and hold those in power accountable.
