To outdo India in the race of hoisting the tallest national flag, Pakistan has announced plans to erect a 500-foot tall tower in Lahore. Punjab government is set to allocate Rs400 million from its development budget for this ambitious project, which is scheduled to be completed by Independence Day, August 14, 2023.
This move appears to be a response to India’s previous attempt when it raised its national flag on a 418-foot high tower at the joint check post at Wagah last year. This ongoing rivalry between the two nations over the height of their national flags began in March 2017, when India hoisted a 360-feet tall tricolor. Pakistan responded later that year by raising a 400-feet tall flag on its 70th Independence Day on August 14, 2017. The flag was hoisted in a park adjacent to the main park.
The decision to invest a significant amount of Rs400 million for the flag comes shortly after Pakistan received a much-needed financial boost from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under a loan agreement. Despite facing economic challenges, the country seems determined to make a grand statement with the world’s tallest national flag. The flag will be hoisted at Liberty Chowk, Lahore, marking a new chapter in the symbolic competition between the two nations.
