In a recent development, Faisal Karim Kundi, the Minister of State for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, has dismissed rumors regarding an increase in visa fees for Iraq. The minister, who also serves as the Central Information Secretary of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), issued a statement on Thursday to clarify the situation.
The rumors, allegedly spread by certain travel agents and opposition elements, suggested that the cost of obtaining an Iraqi visa had been raised. However, Kundi firmly refuted these claims, stating that they were contrary to reality. He emphasized that the PPP’s chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, had successfully advocated for a reduction in visa fees during his recent visit to Iraq.
Kundi further revealed that he had held an extensive meeting with the Iraqi ambassador on the instructions of Chairman Zardari. The discussion centered around the challenges faced by Pakistani pilgrims. The Iraqi authorities, according to Kundi, denied any plans to increase the visa fee and promised to publish the relevant details on their official website soon.
During the PPP delegation’s last visit to Iraq, several issues were discussed with Iraqi officials. These included the provision of facilities to Pakistani pilgrims, the initiation of a ferry service, and a reduction in visa fees. In a historic move, the foundation for a Pakistani embassy was laid in Iraq for the first time.
The minister also mentioned that the possibility of opening a consulate in Najaf was discussed, along with issues related to business and illegal residents.
Iraq, a country rich in history and culture, is a popular destination for Pakistani visitors. Despite its recent challenges, Iraq continues to attract tourists with its archaeological wonders and the warmth of its people. The country holds significant religious importance for many Pakistanis, making the clarification on visa fees a matter of great relevance.
