- Instagram is testing secret code-locked Reels for added privacy and interactivity.
- Users will see a key icon on locked Reels and must enter the right code to unlock them.
- A hint can be added by creators to help followers guess the secret code.
- The feature is currently limited and may roll out publicly soon.
Instagram is known for always looking for ways to engage the audience in a more entertaining, interactive, and private way. The feature is about testing the hidden Reels and was never revealed to the public until a code was provided.
Instagram Secret Reels – how do they work?
The social media app allows creators to set a passcode on their Reels so that no one can view them without typing the code. Hence, followers would be asked to type a specific code to get access to the material. A lock icon appears on such protected Reels to indicate the existence of something exclusive.
By clicking on the hidden Reel, people are taken to a screen where they can see two options: “Enter secret code” or “Cancel” only. The content becomes available and will be played if the correct code is entered.
If they cannot unlock the Reel, their authors are also allowed to attach a hint to assist viewers in guessing the code.

Why This Feature Is Exciting
- Interactive & Fun: This feature makes Reels a fun game.
- Exclusive Content: It’s the best way for influencers who want to say a little thank you to their biggest supporters or who want to hint at upcoming content without revealing all the details.
- Private Sharing: This new tool can also be used to share completely private videos with chosen people or a group of people, such as personal jokes or special moments.
Instagram has previously implemented some analogous ideas. One example is the sticker that covers a user’s Stories until a follower who has not seen them sends a DM to the poster.
When Will Secret Reels Launch?
Only a limited number of users have received this feature so far. It was initially found on Instagram’s official profile @design, but it is not open to regular users yet.
Following Instagram’s past practices, if the trial period proves successful, a further introduction may occur within a few weeks or months.
How about you, what is your opinion? Are you willing to use secret password-protected Reels to engage with your audience or friends?
