How to Get Nautilus Shells in Minecraft

Nautilus shells are rare items that can be obtained in Minecraft. They come from nautiluses, a type of mollusk that lives inside spiral shells. In Minecraft, nautilus shells are treasured items due to their rarity and their use in crafting conduits.

Nautilus shells are one of the ingredients needed to craft conduits in Minecraft. Conduits are unique blocks that provide special effects for players when placed underwater, making underwater exploration and building much easier.

Specifically, eight nautilus shells are required, along with one heart of the sea, to craft a single conduit. Due to the difficulty of obtaining nautilus shells and the heart of the sea, conduits are challenging items to craft in survival mode.

How to Get Nautilus Shells

1. Fishing

One way to get nautilus shells is by fishing. Nautilus shells are one of the rare “treasure” items that players have a small chance of catching when fishing in oceans or rivers.

The base chance of catching a nautilus shell while fishing is around 16.7%. This change can be slightly increased by placing the Luck of the Sea enchantment on the fishing rod being used.

Chance of Catching Nautilus Shells

To catch treasure items like nautilus shells while fishing, certain conditions need to be met. There must be at least two blocks of space above the bobber, at least two source water blocks below the bobber, and at least two source water blocks horizontally surrounding the water block with the bobber.

Meeting these requirements allows for treasure items to be caught, but does not guarantee catching a nautilus shell specifically. The rarity of around 16.7% still applies.

2. Killing Drowned

Another way to obtain nautilus shells is by killing drowned mobs. Drowned mobs have a small chance of spawning while holding a nautilus shell in their off-hand.

The chances are 3% on Java Edition and 8% on Bedrock Edition. So it is uncommon and unreliable, but killing many drowned mobs can eventually yield some nautilus shells.

Drop of Nautilus Shell Upon Killing Drowned

The one benefit of trying to get nautilus shells from drowned mobs is that if a drowned does spawn while holding a nautilus shell, killing it will guarantee that the nautilus shell drops. So it can be a good mob to farm if you have a drowned spawner set up.

3. Wandering Trader

Wandering traders will sometimes offer nautilus shells for sale. However, wandering traders appear randomly and do not always sell nautilus shells when they do appear.

Still, checking wandering traders can give you a chance to buy nautilus shells if you have spare emeralds without having to fish or hunt drowned.

Limitations on Quantity Sold by Wandering Traders

The main downside of buying nautilus shells from wandering traders is that they heavily limit the amount available for sale. Usually, they will only sell around 5 nautilus shells at a time.

Since crafting one conduit requires 8 nautilus shells, you would need to find wandering traders selling nautilus shells multiple times before collecting enough through trading alone.

Use of Nautilus Shells

The main use for nautilus shells in Minecraft is crafting conduits. By placing 8 nautilus shells in a ring shape on a crafting grid, with 1 heart of the sea in the middle, you can craft 1 conduit.

No matter which method you use to get them, collecting enough nautilus shells takes a lot of time and effort. Each method has low chances and limitations on how many shells you can realistically get.

So gathering the 8 shells needed for even one conduit requires a heavy time investment. It takes fishing up rare treasures, killing many drowned mobs, trading with many wandering traders, or a combination of all three across many in-game days.

Conclusion

Nautilus shells can be obtained through fishing (16.7% catch chance), killing drowned mobs (3-8% chance to spawn with shells), or trading with wandering traders (selling around 5 shells at once).

Each method is unreliable, but using all three interchangeably can help you gather the 8 shells needed to craft conduits over time.

While tricky to obtain in survival mode, nautilus shells hold great significance as the rare ingredient behind conduits. Conduits offer incredible utility for underwater building, mining, and exploring.

So the precious nautilus shells, as difficult as they are to gather, provide the key to unlocking the true potential of Minecraft’s oceans through conduits.
