Madinah’s history goes back more than fourteen hundred years. Medina is a city in Saudi Arabia. Yathrib was the city’s previous name. Following the introduction of Islam, it was renamed Madinat-ul-Munawwarah.

For Muslims, there are three Holy Places according to Islamic tradition: Makkah, Jerusalem, and Madinah. Madinah is the second most holy city in the world. The most famous mosque in this city is the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid-e-Nabvi), which was established by the last Prophet of Allah, Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). It was founded in 622 AD and has since been expanded.

This city is also the last burial place of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). If a Muslim wants to perform Hajj or Umrah, he must visit this city.

Step-by-Step Procedure to Visit Madina

Muslims, no matter where they live, are always anxious to visit Madinah. The rays of Islam had spread across the city. The blessed tomb of Allah’s last Prophet, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), is situated in the same city Masjid-e-Nabwi. This city is associated with the great sacrifices of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and his followers.

A visit to this city refreshes Muslims’ faith. It helps to strengthen their trust in Islam.

Step 1: Make the intention of visiting Madina

It is said that only the lucky travel to Madinah. If you have the opportunity to visit the city of Madinah, make a real intention to visit this city first.

O, Allah! I start this journey with a sincere heart and with the complete intention of visiting the holy tomb of Your noble Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Accept it with your kindness.

On this journey, recite Darud Sharif regularly. When you see that you are approaching Madinah, avoid superstitions and instead express your joy and passion via literature. Enter tastefully, offering Salam and Darud to your beloved Prophet (PBUH).

Step 2: Departure towards Masjid-e-Nabvi

Masjid-e-Nabvi, built by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), is the third Masjid in Islamic history. Two orphans owned the land of Masjid-e-Nabvi. The land was offered to the mosque by the two children, but the Prophet (PBUH) refused to accept it. Hazrat Abu Ayub Ansari (RA) bought the land and offered it for the mosque’s contribution. Every Caliph of the time added to the beauty of this Masjid by building and repairing it.

It is now the world’s biggest mosque and the second holiest site after Masjid al-Haram. All important Muslim matters were decided at Masjid Nabvi, according to Islamic history. It served as a center for Islamic teaching, Quranic teaching, and other religious activities. When visiting this location, bear the following factors in mind:

  • Keep your things at your place of residence after entering Madina. You must not bring them into the Masjid Nabvi.
  • Then, before going to the Holy Prophet’s tomb, take a bath (Ghusl) and conduct ablutions (Vudu) (PBUH).
  • Wear nice and clean clothes.
  • Recite Darud Sharif and depart towards Masjid-e-Nabvi while applying perfume (Atar).

Step 3: Enter from Bab-e-Jibril

The door through which Hazrat Jibril (AS) used to descend on the Holy Prophet (PBUH) with the Wahi is known as Bab-e-Jibril. So, try entering the Masjid-e-Nabvi by Bab-e-Jibril or Bab-us-Salam. If not, you can enter by any other gate.

Step 4: Enter with the Right Foot

When you go to visit a loved one, you strive not to make a mistake. Do the same with your devotion to the Prophet (PBUH). So, as you enter, make sure to step on the right foot. And with these words, keep your tongue wet with Allah’s remembrance (Subhan Allah, Alhamdu Lillah, Allahu Akbar). Pray with Darud and enter the Mosque.

Step 5: Perform Two Raka’ts of Nafl

Everyone wants to go to Madinah to pray. Of course, only the lucky ones are given this opportunity. If you are one of the lucky ones, you must pray here since this mosque is where the Prophet (PBUH) performed the greatest prayers. He (PBUH) was emotionally connected to the mosque and the city of Madinah. So, try saying your prayers here.

If there is no Makrooh time, enter the Mosque and recite two Rak’ats of Nafl. Try to do the Nawafil near the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) burial place in Riaz al-Jannah. If this is not possible, pay it somewhere close.

Step 6: Tombs of the Esteemed Companions

There are 3 brass nets in front of the Holy Tomb of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), each with a hole in it. On one side, there is a large perforated lattice and two little perforated lattices. There is a door between them that remains closed. The Prophet’s face is directly in front of the huge hole on one side of the door. The first is in front of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (RA), while the second is in front of Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA).

When you stand in front of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), greet him with the greatest politeness and respect, and then offer Darud Sharif. At the same time, use words worthy of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Read and offer any greetings that come to mind.

After all, pray to Allah and ask for the blessings of this world and the next.

Step 7: Offer Salam from others

Everyone wants to visit Madinah and see the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah Be Upon Him). When people go for Hajj or Umrah, many people ask them to greet and pray for them. So, once you’ve offered your Salam, go ahead and offer Salam to your friends and family who have requested you to. Mention the names of these friends and family when offering Salam.

Step 8: Salam on First Caliph of Muslims

The grave of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (RA), the first Caliph of Muslims, is located to the right of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). After the Prophet Muhammad’s death, he (RA) became the first Muslim Calipha Rashdin (PBUH). He was the first person to accept Islam. Her unparalleled sacrifices have been acknowledged throughout Islamic history. He was also Hazrat Muhammad’s closest companion and relative (PBUH).

He ruled after the Holy Prophet (PBUH) for two years, two months, and fourteen days before dying of illness. He is the highest ranking of the companions. So greet him and ask Allah to forgive and mercy him. Pray for yourself as well via them.

Step 9: Salam on Second Caliph of Muslims

The grave of Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA), the second Caliph of Muslims, is located on the right side of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (RA). He succeeded Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (RA) as Caliph of Muslims after his death. He (RA) was the most powerful and influential Caliph in Islamic history. He was well-known for his justice and for spreading Islam far and wide throughout his lifetime.

When his son was sued, he decided on the standards of justice. In terms of people, he (RA) was afraid of Allah. He (RA) once said that if a dog was discovered dead by the river during my reign, I would have to answer for it on the Day of Judgment.

When you are present in front of Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA), greet him humbly and pray.

Step 10: Offer Forty Prayers in Masjid-e-Nabvi

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) used to pray mostly for the Masjid Nabvi out of love. According to popular belief, men should give 40 prayers in Masjid-e-Nabvi. Some traditions hold that it is not necessary. It is Mustahab that reciting it is a reward, and not reciting it is not a sin.

Step 11: Other places to visit

Apart from Masjid-e-Nabvi, Madinah has a wealth of other sights. Some of the most well-known include Masjid Quba, Masjid Qiblatain, Jannat al-Baqee, Uhud Mount, tombs of historical Sahabaas such as Hazrat Hamza (RA), and Martyrs of the Battle of Uhud.

Visiting Masjid Quba

As previously stated, the Masjid Quba is the first mosque built in Islamic history. It was built by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself during his journey to Madinah. It is a long way from Madinah. The first Friday prayer was offered here, conducted by Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), and is mentioned in the Holy Quran.

According to Islamic tradition, the Prophet (PBUH) would pray here once a week and always conduct ablutions (Vudu) from his home. One Umrah is equivalent to two rak’ats of Nafl in Masjid Quba. You are required to pray here. Those performing Hajj or Umrah should also visit this place and ask for prayers.

Visiting Masjid al-Qiblatayn

The Masjid al-Qiblatayn mosque is where the Holy Prophet (PBUH) was told to change his Qiblah. That is why it is called Masjid al-Qiblatayn. From Jerusalem to Makkah, Allah commanded His Prophet to prostrate. It was built in 623 AD and is one of Madinah’s earliest mosques. You must come here when visiting other places. Make Dua and offer prayers here as you would anywhere else.

Visit Janat ul-Baqi

This world is a temporary abode, and the cemetery is every human being’s last resting place. Visiting cemeteries is a good way to keep one’s heart soft and to remember the Hereafter. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also directed that people visit graves to remember death and understand that there is another world after this one.

Madinah’s cemetery is known as Janat ul-Baqi. It is the last resting place of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) wives and close relatives, as well as many of his associates. The visit to Janat ul-Baqi is a reminder of the Companions’ tireless work and significant sacrifices for the cause of Islam.

O Allah, have mercy on us with their charity and help us to follow them.

Visit Mount Uhud

On the outskirts of Mount Uhud, a second battle began between Muslims and unbelievers. In this battle, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was severely wounded till some people spread the rumor of His death. In this great war, many of Propet’s companions (Sahabas) and family were also injured. The goal of visiting Mount Uhud is to greet these great people and honor the martyrs’ sacrifices.

When visiting martyrs’ graves, you must pray. Ask Allah to forgive them, have mercy on them, and be pleased with them in prayer.

Step 12: Departure from Madinat-ul-Munawwarh

The more impatient and restless a person is for a visit to Madinah, the more depressed he will be when he returns. Returning to the place where he has been waiting for years is very difficult for him. When you are ready to return from Madinah, greet the Prophet (PBUH) once more and pray to Allah to return to him. May Allah accept all of the prayers offered here.

Avoid Making Such Mistakes and Warnings When You Visit Madina

  • If the goal of your visit to Medina is to visit the Masjid-e-Nabwi and the grave of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), avoid doing any unnecessary rituals.
  • Take extra steps to keep yourself clean before visiting Masjid Nabvi. Make no use of anything repulsive.
  • Instead of moving away from the grave after visiting it, pray to one side.
  • When praying, do not pray fervently to the Prophet (PBUH), but rather pray to Allah through Him, for doing so is a kind of shirk.
  • It is haraam to visit the Holy Prophet’s blessed tomb and ask for blessings on the four walls. This is also considered a shirk.
  • When you arrive at the Prophet’s tomb, do not raise your voice (PBUH).
  • Allow others to visit the blessed tomb of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) after you. Repeat in other Holy Places.
