Google appears to be preparing another upgrade to Gemini Live, its AI-powered assistant, that already allows users to share their camera view to get real-time instructions. According to new reports, Gemini Live could soon integrate more closely with Google Maps, as it will display interactive information cards when highlighting landmarks and locations.
This feature was discovered from an APK teardown by Android Authority, which spotted the feature in the Google app beta version 16.35.63. The teardown suggests that Gemini Live can project Google Maps info cards directly into its viewfinder, expanding the assistant’s current ability to identify and explain places in real-time.
How the Google Maps extension works
Currently, users can access a restaurant or a landmark, open Gemini Live, and then tap their camera to get information. Gemini Live will display on-screen info cards with information, including the location name and its current score on Google Maps reviews.
According to screenshots, Gemini can even offer multiple info cards if it detects more than one name for the same location. Interestingly, it is reported that the feature does not appear to use the phone’s location services. Instead, it identifies locations through the camera viewfinder or voice queries.
Voice and camera support
The cards with Google Maps will not be limited to the camera mode. Users who are more comfortable with voice interaction will be able to ask Gemini Live to provide information about places near them and receive the same type of info cards.
When will it launch?
As with all APK teardowns, there’s no guarantee that this feature will officially roll out. However, combined with recent rumors of a possible Gemini Live redesign, the new integration suggests Google is moving closer to turning Gemini into a full-fledged smartphone assistant that can provide rich and contextual guidance.
