Google Gemini Now Lets Users Upload Audio Files

Google has been continuously improving Gemini since its launch in 2023, expanding its functionality and making it a more powerful AI assistant. Now, one of the most requested features has finally come: Gemini can process uploaded audio files on Android, iOS, and the web.

According to Google VP Josh Woodward, audio support has been the #1 request from users. With this update, Gemini users are now able to directly upload audio files to the app through the File button. Once uploaded, the AI can transcribe, summarize, and extract insights from the recordings.

How it works

Google’s support documentation notes that users can upload as many as 10 files at a time with a total maximum length of 10 minutes of audio. Standard Gemini usage limits will apply to this feature too, so users should be mindful of file size and frequency.

Previously, Gemini used to support spoken communication with Gemini Live, but this new feature is even more advanced because the AI will be able to handle pre-recorded audio. That opens the way to more flexible use cases, especially for students and professionals working with large amounts of spoken content.

This is only the most recent of a series of enhancements. Recently, Google added more personalization options for Gemini, introduced the chatbot to Google Finance, and announced a new redesign that will come with a new floating card-based interactions system.

The audio upload feature is still rolling out gradually. It already appears in the Gemini app for some users and will appear for other users within weeks. To test it, just upload an audio file and command Gemini. If supported, the file will be processed; otherwise, you will get a warning that the file type is not yet compatible.
