71-Year-Old Southern California Hiker Succumbs to Extreme Heat in Death Valley

A 71-year-old outdoor enthusiast from Southern California Steve Curry lost his life after an extensive hike in the scorching heat of Death Valley National Park. Known as the world’s hottest place, the park has been recording record-breaking temperatures this summer.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Curry collapsed and died on Tuesday, with officials attributing his death to heat-related causes. The incident occurred just hours after Curry had spoken to a Times reporter about his passion for hiking in extreme conditions. He was found collapsed outside the restroom at Golden Canyon, where despite immediate attempts by park rangers to save him, he could not be revived.

Curry, a retired electrician and former employee of the Los Angeles Unified School District was an ardent hiker who had also joined a rock climbing group and taken wilderness training courses. His wife, Rima Evans Curry, shared that her husband always found joy in the outdoors and loved sleeping under the stars. She said, “He went having accomplished something he wanted to do. He wanted to go to Death Valley. He wanted to do a hike.”

On the day of the incident, the thermometer at the Furnace Creek Visitor’s Center registered a staggering 121 degrees Fahrenheit. Just days before, temperatures had reached a sweltering 128 degrees Fahrenheit at Furnace Creek, according to the National Weather Service. The highest temperature ever recorded on Earth was 134 F in July 1913 at the same location, as per the World Meteorological Organization.

This unfortunate event marks the second hiker death in the park this month, highlighting the extreme risks associated with outdoor activities in such harsh weather conditions.
