WhatsApp to add disappearing ‘About’ status updates soon

WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that will ensure that the About section in the user profiles is much more dynamic and time-sensitive. According to WABetaInfo, this feature was spotted in the Android beta version 2.25.21.17.

Currently, the About section usually has static or outdated text, but with this new update, users will be able to set temporary status updates that would automatically disappear after a set duration.

Users will see a new pop-up to alert them about the About disappearing status when editing their About section. After typing a custom status or selecting from preset options, they can set a duration using a new “Duration” panel. Users can either set a time limit or define their timing, and once the time is up, About update will be automatically deleted.

This feature is designed to make the About section but in a way that it is more relevant and real-time as the availability indicator on platform like Slack. It can display moods to availability updates and reducing the chances of outdated information remaining on profiles.

These temporary updates will be visible to other users in a profile of a contact, and they will be displayed in the conversation header right under the contact’s name. Notably, the user is allowed to delete these updates manually before the set time expires, and visibility will still follow existing privacy settings.

Currently, the feature is still under development and it has not been rolled out on beta-testers either. However, it is expected to come in beta soon and then become available to everyone.
