WhatsApp is getting into the future of AI-powered communication with a new voice chat feature for Meta AI. The feature enables users to engage in a real-time voice chat with the Meta AI assistant without typing queries manually.
According to WABetaInfo, the feature is currently available on WhatsApp beta version 2.25.21.21 to a few Android users. With this rollout, WhatsApp makes Meta AI a direct rival to ChatGPT Voice Mode and Gemini Live.
How WhatsApp Meta AI voice chat works
When users open Meta AI chat screen from the Chats tab, a waveform icon will appear. Tap it to start a voice session immediately.
However, the voice chat option is disabled by default, and you have to turn it on in the voice preferences menu, allows you to control when you might want to use it.
The feature is also integrated into Calls tab, where users can access Meta AI voice sessions without multiple taps.
Several features of this new AI voice experience are useful, such as:
- Turn on/off audio output with speaker toggle.
- Voice conversation history for reference.
- Customizable AI voices such as Aspen, Jade, and others.
- Ability to show photos taken from your gallery or camera and get answers in Meta AI voice.
- Background voice chats, so you can switch apps, and Meta AI works to summarize a web page or write a list.
Meta AI voice chat is currently available to a limited beta testers on Android, and it will roll out in coming weeks. As with most WhatsApp features first rolled out to iOS beta users and then to a worldwide release.
