The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a flood warning as a monsoon period grips the region.
According to the forecast, “a deep trough of westerly wave, strong incursion of monsoon currents from both sources, and approaching upper circulation of the air, prevalent Heavy to Very Heavy rainfall with Highly Heavy falls at dispersed places is expected over upper streams of rivers Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab, and to some extent over River Jhelum.”
According to the PMDA, “Very High to Exceptionally High-level flooding is anticipated in River Chenab” owing to these weather circumstances.
It further stated that the flood scenario in the rivers Ravi and Sutlej will be determined by Indian releases. “A high to very high-level flood is anticipated in the Nullas of the Ravi and Chenab rivers.”
It has requested that the government take all necessary precautions to avoid an unfavorable situation. “It is further requested that you please issue necessary instructions/directions to field formations/quarters concerned to remain vigilant during the said period,” the alert states.
At least four people were killed and over a dozen were injured in separate incidences of roof and wall collapses in the provincial capital on the second day of severe rainfall.
