Meta Plans to Introduce Ad-Free Subscriptions for Instagram and Facebook

Meta is contemplating the introduction of ad-free versions of these popular social media platforms in Europe. The company is expected to charge users approximately 10 euros per month for this service, a price point that aligns with other subscription-based services such as Netflix and YouTube Premium.

This development comes as Meta seeks to comply with European Union regulations that could limit its ability to personalize ads for users without their explicit consent. This could potentially affect Meta’s primary revenue source, which is largely dependent on advertising. By offering users a choice between a free, ad-supported plan and a paid subscription, Meta aims to meet regulatory requirements without negatively impacting its advertising business.

Two sources have shared potential pricing plans, with one suggesting that the most practical option would be a 10 euro ($10.49) per month plan. The implementation of this new model is expected in the coming months. However, for mobile devices, the cost of a single account could rise to around 13 euros to account for commissions imposed by Apple’s and Google’s app stores, according to the second source.

Earlier this year, Meta was hit with a 390 million euro fine from Ireland’s Data Privacy Commissioner and was instructed not to use the “contract” legal basis for delivering ads to users based on their online behavior. In response to this, Meta announced its intention to seek consent from EU users before allowing businesses to target ads, in order to align with the changing regulatory demands in the region.

A representative from Meta stated that while the company firmly believes in “free services that are supported by personalized ads”, it is exploring “options to ensure we comply with evolving regulatory requirements”. Both Ireland’s Data Protection Commission and the European Commission have yet to comment on the matter.

As Meta navigates these changes, users will be closely watching to see how the company balances its commitment to free services with the need to comply with regulatory requirements.
