Meta faces scrutiny once again as reports surface that the Facebook app may be scanning the camera rolls of its users without explicit consent. Privacy activists are also urging users to review their settings because some features linked with Meta AI tools appear to be on by default.
Within Facebook’s privacy menu, two toggles are available that are connected to photo access/
- Camera Roll Suggestions – Let’s Meta recommends pictures you can post.
- Camera Roll Cloud Processing – Allows Meta AI to access your photos to generate creative edits.
Some users also reported that the first setting enabled ‘photo suggestions’ automatically, and the other option was also enabled without permission.
When the issue was initially flagged, Meta told TechCrunch that the AI-related feature was still in testing and could be disabled at any time. The company also made it clear that AI photo suggestions are visible only to the user. However, given Meta’s history of privacy scandals, many users remain skeptical and frustrated.
The bigger concern is whether Meta is silently implementing this at a larger level, with more individuals still discovering all these toggles turned on without their consent. Mashable has requested clarification from Meta, but no new statement has been issued at the time of writing.
