The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is set to meet with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman, Imran Khan, today. The purpose of the meeting is to seek the party’s support for a $3 billion standby agreement and its overarching objectives. This information was revealed by Hammad Azhar, a member of PTI, through a tweet.
Azhar stated that the IMF has reached out to PTI’s economic team to garner their backing for the standby agreement. He further added that the IMF delegation will meet with Imran Khan at Zaman Park in the afternoon. Both the PTI’s economic team and the IMF team will participate in the discussions, both in person and virtually.
In a separate statement, Esther Perez Ruiz, the IMF’s resident representative for Pakistan, confirmed that IMF staff are currently meeting with representatives from major political parties in Pakistan. These include PML-N, PPP, and PTI. The aim of these meetings is to secure assurances of their support for the key objectives and policies under a new IMF-supported program. This comes ahead of the upcoming national elections in Pakistan.
It is important to note that the IMF Executive Board is scheduled to convene on 12 July. The agenda includes approving the disbursement of an initial tranche of $1.1 billion for Pakistan under the standby agreement. This meeting with PTI Chairman Imran Khan is part of the IMF’s efforts to ensure broad-based political support for the standby agreement and its objectives.
