Unfortunately, WhatsApp does not notify users when someone blocks them, but some indicators exist. There are definitely clear signs that one has been blocked on the messaging platform. If you are in doubt, here are hints.
Twitter and Sina Weibo are the two platforms among the seven that inform you that a specific user has blocked you. While other social apps notify all your friends that you no longer share anything with them, WhatsApp just tells you and the person who decided to block you.
While this tutorial was done on Android, the steps and screenshots may differ for iPhones. In case they do so, there will be a mention of the steps differing for iPhones.
How to know if you were blocked on WhatsApp
If you are blocked on WhatsApp, you cannot view a friend’s profile picture or status or know whether a friend is online, and they will not receive messages from you. These are the signs you should check to confirm whether you have been blocked or not.
Check their Last Seen status
If a person decides to block you on WhatsApp, they limit your access to information on their ‘Last Seen’ status, so you cannot tell whether they are online now or were at any time in the past. One way of doing this is simply checking to see whether or not this is the case if you’ve been blocked.
- Open the WhatsApp app.
- Open the conversation with that person.
- Check the “Last Seen” status.
- If you see their Last seen status, you may not be blocked, but if you do not, you might be blocked.
Check your contacts’ checkmarks
In WhatsApp, two blue checkmarks indicate a message’s content was read, two grey checkmarks indicate that the message has been received, and one grey receipt checkmark. Any message sent to a contact who has blocked you only displays one tick indicating that the message has been delivered, but the second tick that indicates a message has been delivered is never shown.
- Open the WhatsApp app.
- Open the conversation with that person.
- Send a text to them.
- If you show only one checkmark tick, it may be a sign that you have blocked.
If you only notice one checkmark, it can suggest that the person’s phone is out of battery, in airplane mode, misplaced, or switched off. However, you are probably blocked if you only see one checkmark and cannot see their Last Seen status.
Can you unblock yourself on WhatsApp?
There is no option to unblock someone on WhatsApp. Only the person who blocks you can unmute you; anyone telling you differently is tricking you or wants to rip you off. WhatsApp has security policies that cannot be easily compromised or violated.
