Rumors are swirling that the source code for Grand Theft Auto 5 has been leaked online, along with other confidential files related to Rockstar Games’ upcoming titles.
Reports emerged that a 4GB file containing GTA 5 code was leaked initially. However, hackers claim to possess the full 200GB source file, including assets and 3D models that could allow the game to be rebuilt.
The data allegedly also contains information on other unreleased games like GTA 6, Bully 2, and Midnight Club 5.
Rockstar has faced breaches before, having to unveil the GTA 6 trailer prematurely after a hack. However, this leak seems much more substantial.
Take-Two Interactive is working urgently to remove links to the data. But with parts of the source code now circulating online, the damage may be done.
It’s unclear precisely what the hackers have or what they plan to do with it. There is potential for them to sell the data, leak it publicly, or attempt to extort Rockstar Games. Either way, it places sensitive information regarding their upcoming titles into unknown hands.
It also raises worrying questions over data security, especially with the highly anticipated GTA 6 now confirmed. Rockstar will be working diligently to contain the threat this leak poses, but it seems the studio faces another rocky road ahead.
