Duolingo has begun utilizing AI to generate content for its lessons, resulting in a 10% reduction in its contractors.
The company confirmed the cuts, stating “We just no longer need as many people to do the type of work some of these contractors were doing. Part of that could be attributed to AI.”
Reports first emerged in December 2023 from a translator claiming to work at Duolingo. “Our team had four core members and two of us got the boot. The two who remained will just review AI content to make sure it’s acceptable,” they posted.
The company has used machine learning models since 2020 to adjust lesson difficulty and introduced a Large Language Model in 2023 to generate entire exercises from prompts with just “the click of a button.”
Last year also saw the launch of the premium Duolingo Max subscription, featuring new tools powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4. The shift suggests AI may reduce Duolingo’s need for human reviewers and content creators
While Duolingo stresses oversight from teaching experts, the cuts indicate AI is playing a growing role. This poses concerns about automation replacing jobs previously done by people.
