How to Delete Windows Installer Patch Files

After your computer installs a Windows patch, the patch file and associated installation files are cached in the secret system subdirectory C:\Windows\Installer\$PatchCache$. When a patch is removed, the files in this cache are mostly utilized to roll back the system. If you have a device in your office with a quickly filling hard drive, clearing the cache can free up GB of space that can be used for company files such as contracts, invoices, evaluations of staff, or copies of business letters.

How to Delete Windows Installer Patch Files

  • Log in using an administrator account to the machine.
  • Click the Windows “Start” button, type “cmd” (without quotation marks) into the Search region, then click “Enter.” A command prompt window should be shown.
  • Enter the following code:
    rmdir /q /s %WINDIR%\Installer\$PatchCache$
  • Enter “Enter:”
