WhatsApp Web was made for computers, but sometimes you want it open on your phone instead. Maybe your laptop’s not around, maybe you’re running a second account, whatever the reason, it’s doable, just not in the obvious way.
Here’s the thing though. If you type web.whatsapp.com into your phone’s browser. You have to trick the browser first.
Why it does not work
Open web.whatsapp.com on your phone normally and you won’t get the QR code screen. The site notices you’re on mobile and basically tells you to go use the app instead.
See that QR code, you need to switch your browser to desktop mode first. Sounds technical, it’s really just two taps.
How to Use WhatsApp Web on a Smartphone
If you’re on Chrome or Edge (Android)
- Open the browser and go to web.whatsapp.com.
- Tap the three dots in the corner.
- Tap Desktop site.
- Refresh. The QR code shows up now.
If you’re on Safari (iPhone):
- Open Safari, go to web.whatsapp.com.
- Tap the “aA” icon near the address bar.
- Tap Request Desktop Website.
- Refresh the page.
Scan the Code
Once you see the QR code sitting there:
- Grab the phone you actually want to link, could be a second phone, or it could be the same one if you’re juggling two accounts.
- Open WhatsApp, tap the three dots up top.
- Tap Linked Devices.
- Tap Link a Device.
- Scan the code.
Your chats load up right away and you can message like normal from the browser.
Call on WhatsApp Web works properly now. It came out of beta on July 28, 2026, so one-on-one calls and even group calls with up to 32 people go through the browser too. That’s new, so this isn’t just for texting anymore.
