WhatsApp is rolling out a new “App updates” section for its Mac beta app, giving users control over how often the app updates. This feature is currently in beta for a select group of users.
Users can now choose between two options in settings: “Latest version,” provided with daily builds containing all the fixes and improvements that are ready, and “Stable weekly version”, in which users can find all the fixes grouped and released in a less frequent version, typically before the weekend. There is also a manual “Check for updates” button that lets users check for new versions at any time.
The update comes after WhatsApp discontinued its Mac beta program on TestFlight earlier this year. However, beta versions remain available but only on WhatsApp’s own servers and not on Apple’s.
WABetaInfo says that sometimes the daily version has features in it before the weekly one is released, but can also have more bugs because it is work in progress. The weekly option is described as the more secure and stable option for most users, especially those who use WhatsApp for work.
WhatsApp has not announced an exact timeline for when the feature will be available to all beta users, but it is likely to roll out in the next few weeks.
